Around 50% of implant patients will develop peri-implant mucositis over time. Approximately one-third of all patients will develop clinically manifested peri-implantitis.
ImplantSafe DR identifies these patients at an early stage, supports communication in dental hygiene, and helps ensure maximum compliance with the necessary recall intervals. In this way, long-term implant success can be guaranteed, forensic risks reduced and delegated preventive measures increased.
Systematic Implant Sustainability
Dental Implants with Systematic Biomarker Checkups
The Success Story for Sustainability, Implant protection, and Forensic Documentation
Dental implants give patients a new lease of life, more confidence and a stronger bite. It’s not surprising, then, that increasing numbers of patients are choosing implant-supported tooth replacement despite private costs of around EUR 1,250 to 3,000 per implant (www.dginet.de).
The German Association of Oral Implantology (DGI) estimates that, in Germany alone, the number of implants inserted each year has risen from around 380,000 to around 1.3 million over the last 20 years (DGI press release dated 30 November 2018).

Every 4 Minutes, an Implant Is Lost
Peri-implantitis is Gaining Ground
Around 87% of younger senior citizens state that they are satisfied or very satisfied with their implants. However, despite impressive success rates, an implant is still lost every four minutes, which translates into 140,000 cases per year, according to experts (Wagner 2010). Undetected inflammation and tissue breakdown processes are among the most frequent causes of implant loss. On average, peri-implant mucositis is detected in around 47% of implant patients and almost 30% of implants (Lee et al. 2017). A recent meta-analysis indicated that peri-implantitis was found in almost 20% of implant patients and 9% of implants (Lee et al. 2017).
Some of the evidence-based conclusions drawn by the authors of the new peri-implantitis classification (Schwarz et al 2018):
-
- Peri-implantitis is a pathological condition that occurs in the tissue around implants. It is characterized by inflammation of the peri-implant soft tissue and progressive bone degradation.
-
- The initial stages of peri-implantitis can occur at an early stage during aftercare following implant treatment.
-
- Peri-implantitis may progress at a faster rate than periodontitis and is usually more difficult to treat.
-
- There are strong indications that patients with chronic periodontitis, poor plaque control and a lack of regular oral hygiene are at an increased risk of developing peri-implantitis after their implants are placed.

The Personalized Prevention Plan with Declaration of Consent
The Best Protection Against Peri-implantitis
The best protection against peri-implantitis is early detection of collagen tissue breakdown around the implant. The earlier a hidden inflammation can be detected, the easier it will be to treat. What’s more, the earlier the affected areas of the implant and periodontium are specifically and professionally treated, the higher the chances that the patient will make a full recovery. Therefore, every opportunity for early detection and prophylaxis should be utilized to ensure that complications or implant loss can be combated through treatment at an early stage. However, it is not possible to distinguish healthy from unhealthy peri-implant tissue using probing or pocket-depth measurement alone.
Enhance Existing Diagnostics with ImplantSafe DR
The aMMP-8 technology used in the ImplantSafe Digital Reader System is two to three times more sensitive than the standard “bleeding on probing” (BOP) procedure, enabling a more reliable quantitative assessment of periodontal “grading” – a key progression parameter.
ImplantSafe® DR offers fast quantitative detection of the risk of peri-implantitis and its progression for each and every implant. There’s no waiting for test results to come back from a lab.
Instant digital analysis enables rapid visualization of the measurement, which in turn helps raise awareness among dental implant patients and motivate them to take preventive action.
Declaration of Consent in the prevention plan
The Declaration of Consent, which was developed with leading lawyers, provides you with the forensic documentation you require and explains to patients the importance of attending preventive checkup at the recommended intervals.
